Why
Should I Exercise? Some Good Reasons
Have you ever wondered if all this exercise is really worth
it? Have you ever come home from a busy day at work, thought about working out
and then decided that you just did not have enough time? Have you skipped your
workout so often that you feel embarrassed to go back to your exercise class or
to the gym?
Remember that the benefits of exercise are only for those
who make exercise a lifelong commitment.
Remember also that the earliest that you can start is
right now. Treat exercise just like one of your business or social appointments
and you will find the time. One good way to do this is to make appointments
with a professional trainer.
In case you have forgotten why you are exercising, here
are a few more reminders.
-
Regular aerobic exercise helps prevent heart
disease by slowing plaque buildup in the arteries of the heart. It increases
the level of HDL (the good cholesterol) and decreases the level of LDL (the
bad cholesterol). It also helps prevent the formation of obstructive blood
clots from forming in the arteries.
-
Exercise makes life more enjoyable. As your
level of fitness improves, activities become easier. A night of dancing, a
day of skiing or a walk in the woods becomes a pleasure instead of a chore.
Exercise increases your resistance to stress. It also helps you sleep
better. You are a more rested, active, happy person.
-
Hypertension is the silent killer. Stressful
modern lives increases blood pressure that will eventually leads to stroke.
Regular exercise helps normalize blood pressure.
-
Exercise improves the body’s ability to regulate
blood sugar which helps prevent type II diabetes.
-
Exercises such as walking, jogging, aerobic
dance, racquet sports, etc. prevent the loss of bone mineral that occurs as a
person ages. Bone mineral loss leads to osteoporosis – weak and brittle
bones.
-
Physical activity strengthens the joints and
connective tissue (tendons and ligaments) that hold the body together.
-
Exercise is essential in any weight loss
program. Exercise burns calories. Weight lost through exercise will more
likely be fat loss rather than water or muscle loss. Weight lost through
exercise (and maintained through exercise) is more likely to stay lost.
-
Back pain can be prevented or lessened by strong
muscles in the legs, lower back and abdominals.
